"Front Page" content type?
It occurs to me that our current front page style (the "river of news" view) is pretty lousy. There's no control to prevent non-admin members from posting to the front page. This makes me think we need a different solution.
What if instead of a posting blogs to the front page, we create a content type specifically for front page posts. This way, front page posts would exclusively appear on the front page and staff members would have much better control over what goes to the front page and what doesn't. The downside is that there is some crossover between front page posts and blog posts. Members would have to choose between one or the other.

As far as the actual
As far as the actual content of front page posts is concerned, we could just ensure that as admins, we observe some degree of distinction between our personal blog entries (stuff that's personal and journalesque) and bloggish sorts of posts about stuff that affects the site more generally.
"Here's what's on my mind, and also: new story is up in the Projects Page" goes on the front page. "This and that happened and then..." doesn't; that's for the personal blogs.
It's not a *perfect* solution, admittedly, and it would probably be impossible to keep to if we had a large number of admins.
